THE LORD’S SUPPER (June 2021)

1 Corinthians 11:23-28

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” – 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” – 1 Corinthians 11:23-28

  1. WHEN DO WE DO THIS?

“as often as” (v.25,26)

  1. WHY DO WE DO THIS?

  1. The Lord’s Supper invites us to REMEMBER all the gospel has accomplished in the past

“Do this in remembrance of me” (v.24,25)

“It is the One who has given something for us at Calvary asking each of us to remember His death, to put that at the very center of our Christian experience. It is He who loved us even unto death calling us out from the busyness, and often the barrenness, of all our pressure and work, that we might wait upon Him in the stillness of our hearts and worship Him. He points us back, not to His life or example, but to that which is at the very heart of the Christian gospel: the atonement of the cross, the finished work of Calvary and the open tomb.” – Alan Redpath

“For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” – Colossians 2:9

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21

  1. The Lord’s Supper allows us to PROCLAIM the power of the gospel in the present

  1. The Lord’s Supper inspires us to CELEBRATE all that the gospel will accomplish in the future

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” – 1 Corinthians 11:26

  1. The Lord’s Supper encourages us to EXAMINE the impact of the gospel in my life today

“Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” – 1 Corinthians 11:28

“But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you.” – 1 Corinthians 11:17-18

“I like to imagine that I can turn 360° and not think of a soul that I have offended or a grudge I am harboring. Frankly, I think if we were really honest, during this time of reflection and examination, there would be rustling of people as one believer seeks out another to ask forgiveness.” – Charles Stanley

“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 11:27
