“If any woman who is a believer has dependent widows, she must assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows indeed.” – Timothy 5:16
At Hope Church, we teach all the time that when you enter into a relationship with Jesus, you not only have a new identity, but you belong to a new family! And that family is none other than the family of God. Paul wrote in Galatians 6:2 to “bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” That means that it’s our responsibility, out of obedience to Christ, to care for one another. Here, Paul is teaching Timothy that widows, who have no family members or close friends to help, are to depend upon the church to step in and meet their needs. In essence, it’s our job to not be burdened by the burdens our family in Christ asks us to bear. For Jesus said it Himself, “It’s more blessed to give than to receive.”
