"And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?" Matthew 6:27-30

“Worry is practical atheism.” I heard that phrase as a teenager and it has stuck with me ever since. These words from Jesus’s ‘Sermon on the Mount’ are given to us to make the same point. When we worry about the future, we are exposing a lack of confidence in the only One in the universe who deserves perfect confidence: God Himself. If he has given clothing to plants and food to wild animals, how much more will He provide for His own children? When worry dominates us, it is because we have left God out of the equation of our lives and it can discredit our witness as followers of Jesus. The solution: we must repeatedly remind ourselves of His rightful place for His glory in our own lives and so that He can be made known through us.
