A Biblical Equation for Life

"And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?" Matthew 6:27-30

"Worry is practical atheism." I heard that phrase as a teenager and it has stuck with me ever since. These words from Jesus's 'Sermon on the Mount' are given to us to make the same point. When we worry about the future, we are exposing a lack of confidence in the only One in the universe who deserves perfect confidence: God Himself. If he has given clothing to plants and food to wild animals, how much more will He provide for His own children? When worry dominates us, it is because we have left God out of the equation of our lives and it can discredit our witness as followers of Jesus. The solution: we must repeatedly remind ourselves of His rightful place for His glory in our own lives and so that He can be made known through us.

Worry's Hidden Cost

"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" Matthew 6:25-26

Have you ever been on vacation with someone who could not stop taking pictures? Every random observance, every moment of joy just has to be captured for eternity (if he or she ever looks at it again!). But there is a hidden cost; you often lose the moment you are trying to capture. Jesus' point about worry in these verses hits a similar note. He warns his followers that life is so much bigger than the things we spend our time worrying about. When we don't trust God with our future it costs us the joy of walking with Jesus and being a part of His mission in the present.

What worry do you need to hand over to Jesus today so you can enjoy His presence in your present?
